The following was recorded live at the old studio at WMNF 88.5 on the Morning Show hosted by Bill Dudley. There is a considerable amount of interview time as well as music, so don't get cranky. It is completely live with all the warts and faux pas, and has not been sweetened in my multi million dollar home studio.....I wish. There has been a considerable amount of screaming, hollering, and hand-wringing over the years for us to get some product out to our constituency, and honestly, with the advent and prevalence of lousy home recordings on Chinese multi-tracks, and even less talent, I have hesitated to trip on into that realm. Guilt by association as it were. Because we are and have been just a basic working band, and a long distance one at that, budgetary considerations have always impacted our best laid plans. Mike has labeled this entrance into the recording realm as "for posterity", and I do agree. When I think back to some of the "moments" we have created that should've gone down on recording media, I wince. There have been many, and if you are a fan or follower, you know what I am referring to. I have always admired the chance takers who, for one reason or another, are motivated to create on the fly with as little rehearsal as possible. I enjoy making big mistakes as much as I do having all the pieces fall into place. Musically, close to the edge, has always been more fun. Maybe it is the fine line between genius and abject failure....maybe not. It has always just felt great to me, and I have always had the privilege of playing with people who knew how to make it happen in spades. The folks on this recording revel in it.
This was an extremely cool moment in history for us on the day this was recorded. We were all dead tired and coffee'd up, and Mike and Bink had driven their normal two and a half hours to get to the gig as they always do. If I remember correctly, the kickoff was around 6:00 a.m. The setting was extremely cramped for a full on band, but the excitement and spontaneity were there for sure. Bill and the staff were more than accommodating, and a swell time was definitely had by the band. My greatest wish is that it comes across. Hope you all enjoy listening.
We are also in the throes of a huge undertaking involving over 5 years of live recordings done at various venues, and compiling some very early stuff as well, pre-Binky. A.J. Taylor was the drummer then and joined us not too long after a sojourn with the Artimus Pyle Band. The tracks will show up here as we tweak it and get it useable.
